BUILDING STORIES

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

MICHELLE MARTIN
Michelle has been attending Red Rocks for almost a year now and after steadily attending services for about 6-9 months she decided she was ready to get more involved in the RR community. ?¢??Sports are a passion of mine and when I learned RR had a strong sports ministry I knew that was going to be my first step in meeting more people. Finding people who have heard about futsal is difficult and when I heard there was a whole league dedicated to futsal at Red Rocks I had to be a part of it.?¢??

Through participating in her first Sports league, Futsal, Michelle has been introduced to a community of people at Red Rocks that she was able to quickly relate to as well as understand her passion for soccer and sports a lot more.

?¢??I was able to build community through teamwork, competitiveness, and a passion for physical activity. I also joined the small group during the futsal league, which allowed me an additional opportunity to get to know a handful of the players more personally, rather than just on the field. That experience specifically challenged me in unforeseen ways. I loved being able to connect with other like- minded people during this small group. Being in a small group of like-minded individuals, with similar backgrounds in sports, challenged me to understand the unique role sports plays in each of our lives. For the first time, I was able to really understand the purpose of my involvement with soccer throughout my life. It was encouraging and challenging, but ultimately, it was a unique learning opportunity I couldn't have had without the church's passion to build more community within the sports ministry.?¢??

Michelle?¢??s most memorable moment ?¢??I invited friends of mine from outside the RR community to join a league with me. At the beginning of the league, both friends were confused about the "holding sweaty hands and praying" after each game. By the end of the season though, it was awesome to see them join the circle without a question and participate.?¢??

This year Michelle?¢??s desire is start a new season of life with a refreshed perspective and a confidence and courage that continues to push her forward.

?¢??Last year was a difficult one for me. I experienced a LOT of necessary growth that did not come easily. It took a lot of hard work and trust to get through. I'm looking forward to experiencing life WITH God and letting myself trust that He is in control.?¢??

"But I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling us."
Philippians 3:12-14

MICHAEL STRASBURGER

Michael moved to Colorado almost 2 years ago from New York and didn?¢??t know anyone. He was told by a friend to attend Red Rocks Church and had seen there was a soccer league. ?¢??I worked a lot and wanted the chance to play a game I love with others. I simply lived alone and worked a lot just going to the gym and reading in my off time. I didn?¢??t know how to meet people as an adult in a relationship long distance."

Through participating in soccer, softball and volleyball he has met new friends and fellow believers. ?¢??We can get too competitive and be extreme but after our heads cool, we pray and bring it back to center and that?¢??s Jesus.?¢??

?¢??I had a motorcycle wreck and brain surgery and rehab. I never knew what it meant to walk in the valley of the shadow of death. I have learned to let go and trust God can and will perform tiny miracles.?¢??

This year Michael?¢??s desire is to have a happy marriage and buy a home. When asked what his most memorable moment with the Sports Ministry was in 2013, he replied, ?¢??My soccer team visiting me in the hospital after brain surgery to pray over me. Travis did it multiple times.?¢??

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
Hebrews 10:23-24

Building Stories is a way to share how lives have been impacted through participation in our sports ministry. It opens the door for anyone to use their story to inspire others, impact a community, awaken the dreamer within, lead others to a closer relationship with Christ, and pave the way for leaders to be born. Through the words we share we can open the door not only for ourselves to thrive but also give each other the opportunity to do the same. You never know how one story can change the direction of just one life.
